Success for the squad yet again
On Sunday 2nd September, thirty-seven members headed across to the inaugural West Midlands Karate Open in Cannock which proved to be a very high quality and well run competition. Compliments go out to Joe Mongan and Rob Bingham for organising the event. We certainly look forward to returning in 2019.
Twenty four members of the team were regular squad members with the addition of thirteen less experienced who were only representing the dojo for the first or second time. The team did extremely well and we ended up winning the team of the day trophy having racked up the most points based on medal finishes. During the course of the day we saw some outstanding performances from many of the members.
Coaches for the day were Steve Carless, Bob Piggott, John Santos, Darren Rushton, Paul Stanley and Mark Turner. Thanks you to all coaches who gave their time to support our brilliant team and also to the family members and friends who went along to support on the day.
All team members acquitted themselves superbly on the day, whether they medalled or not. We finished the day with a superb 9 Gold, 11 Silver and 14 Bronze medals. It was very pleasing that twenty-five members medalled. A special mention must go to Gold medallists Johann Santos, Sharaf Ebrahimi and Louis Powell for kata, Anthony Wilkes and Tina Barnes in Kumite plus our super team and pairs kata! A big thank you also to Johann who stepped into the mens team kumite event at the last minute and fought superbly due to the last minute withdrawal of our top fighter Lewis Bradbury due to injury. We all wish Lewis well for a good recovery.
Overall an outstanding day for the Walsall Karate Dojo squad!
